What formed the world? Thousands of years ago, our Chinese ancestors came up with five concepts that formulate everything in the universe, from large to small. They are called the five elements, consisting of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. In ancient Chinese stories, five mythological animals present the five elements in practical form: the white tiger (metal), the Azura dragon (wood), the Black Tortoise (water), the Vermillion Bird (fire), and the Kylin (earth). These characters represent the five houses that corresponds to the five elements at our school, and I drew them into the “cute” version of themselves. It was then made into flags for the 2024 Spirit Week. I also made them into badges to sell at the school’s service fair. The school also used these characters to make a need-to-know video for the Performing Arts Centre. Later, the Azura dragon was specifically modified and made into the school’s 10th anniversary toy product, since 2024 was the year of the dragon in China. Following up with the Chinese New Year spirit, I made the five characters into a series of WeChat emojis, a special new year edition that was meant to spread good wishes and luck.
