Qingyi Lodge: Rebirth of an Abandoned Primary School Located in Xianjing Village, Zhejiang, overlooking Fanzeng Peak. The government sought to create a sketching art destination, entrusting us to renovate an abandoned 1970s–80s brick-concrete primary school into a young artists' dormitory – “Qingyi Lodge”. We retained the form while injecting new life. Classrooms became units: south walls replaced with full-height sliding doors, turning the original corridor into a sketching balcony facing the peak. Skylights above provide steady light; ground-floor units get private courtyards. A steel north corridor serves as entrance. A small hall added on the southeast enables exhibitions and exchange. Along the south playground wall, we added curved metal roofs that screen village clutter while framing views. Removed wall sections, together with the curved roof and scattered walls, create a dual corridor system: an outer social pocket for villagers and an inner walkway for guests. Using local stone slabs, timber, and spontaneous greenery, the space hosts elders, women, tourists, and art students – becoming an extension of the village square.
