DEYA Day Care and After-School Center is a 270-square-meter facility located in Yantai, Shandong Province, designed by 11-Design for children aged 6 to 12. Drawing from the image of a tent — a structure that symbolizes protection, freedom, and exploration — the designers created a space that merges emotional comfort with spatial functionality, using playful design strategies and humble materials. Unlike off-the-shelf tents, which were either too large or difficult to organize, the team created modular units composed of orange steel frames, canvas enclosures, integrated lighting fixtures, and elevated plywood platforms. These units form multi-functional micro-environments for reading, resting, and quiet personal moments. By making the tent the basic spatial unit rather than applying conventional partitioning, the design gives each child a personal realm that fosters both security and a sense of discovery. The visible structure of each tent makes construction logic intuitive even to children — lighting is embedded within the tent’s framework, and the skeleton itself is expressive without reliance on decorative finishes.
