Description
Competition entry and design proposal for a house in upstate Pennsylvania, USA. We recommend the demolition of existing structure which prove inconsistent with present needs would entail high maintenance. The architectural parti is composed of two modules that converge at a vertex, creating an interior courtyard and a large cantilever. The house main volume is aligned towards the waterfall, while a small room and studio look towards the opposite side. A The main volume houses entry, pantry, kitchen, dining, living spaces and circulations. Stairs are the spinal cord of the project which guide the visitor throughout the project and into the river. A large cantilever leans towards the waterfall making an impressive terrace. It allows the main wing to have a spectacular view of the site while framing the landscape. We used exposed concrete while carefully modulated to provide clarity and structural rigor. Carpentry is used throughout the house while creating elegant, warm and sophisticated atmosphere. The project honors the rich heritage of the Howard Family Trust while providing a modern and strong architecture gesture and respecting the landscape.
